Unfortunately, my daughter’s 6th birthday was in September….perfect timing for the Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters (often pronounced as Zoo Zoo Pets hamsters and Zu Zu Pets hamsters) madness to set in…lucky for me!

Within days of the commercials starting for these cute furry hamsters, my daughter had set her heart on one for her birthday…Mr Squiggles no less. All parents with kids will understand when I say that when children of this age get it into their heads that they must have a certain toy…well it really is usually pointless trying to convince them otherwise. Anyway, the continual bombardment of ads didn’t help the situation, nor did the fact that her best friend had already got a Zhu Zhu pet hamster called Num Nums together with a whole hamster world for it to run around in…great!

Let us look at what is going on here. Latest studies show that our brains go on developing until we are about 25. That is one of the reasons why powerful mind altering drugs are not such a good idea. This means in practice that our brains which control our impulses, and even some of our emotions are still not fully developed when we are teenagers. Research also tells us that the parts of the brain which is called the limbic system is what controls our reaction to a fight, flight or freeze response. This is basically what controls our aggressive instincts.

The next couple of days trying to find out what else my daughter wanted were pointless. Apparently, since Zhu Zhu hamsters came out, all other toys in the world were no longer of any interest. The turning point came when my daughter said to me how she didn’t want anything for her birthday but finished by pointing out that all her friends’ moms had already got them a Zhu Zhu hamster…and Funhouse…whatever that was.

Violent kids and teens are a big problem in the Chicago area and I know that chief of the Chicago Public Schools has implemented a drastic change of policy. Instead of strict curfews and video cameras everywhere, the school authorities are now concentrating on conflict resolution and dealing with the kids’ emotional needs. Child psychologists believe that there are protective factors such as learning social and emotional skills which can help kids to pull back from the brink of violence. The Director of the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois certainly is a great supporter of this approach.

Back home and back to the internet. In hindsight, a crazed, angry, tired mother, in hamster desperation with a three day birthday deadline rapidly approaching, husband’s credit card in hand, is perhaps not the ideal shopping scenario from a budget and practical perspective. The result…one Mr Squiggles Zhu Zhu hamster (37.99), one Chunk hamster (35.71), one Zhu Zhu hamster Funhouse (128.91), one hamster car and garage set (99.95), one hamster carrier, bed and blanket set (in pink of course) (59.99) and one healthy hamster exercise wheel (36.25). Grand total…398.80, plus estimated gas and phone = 453.00!

You will be glad to know that my daughter loves her Zhu Zhu pet hamsters and hamster habitat and you literally cannot get her away from them. My husband…not so happy. Guess what our older 8 year old daughter wants for Christmas! Not again. No way. Not me. OK, but I’m going to buy them early before the supply disappears and the prices go up to prices that only a crazy mom would pay!
